London –
Chelsea under Todd Boehly’s era has spent 1 billion pounds to build the team. However, that amount of money couldn’t save them from being massacred by Liverpool.
Chelsea was demolished by Liverpool 1-4 at Anfield, in the ongoing Premier League match on Thursday (1/2/2024) early morning local time. Mauricio Pochettino’s troops were dimmed in the face of intense pressure from the home team.
Diogo Jota, Conor Bradley, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Luis Diaz took turns in scoring against Chelsea’s goal. Chelsea only managed to reply through Christopher Nkunku, who changed the score to 1-3.
The result could have been even more devastating. Liverpool had four chances from Darwin Nunez that hit the post/crossbar.
In terms of gameplay, Chelsea was lackluster, only making four attempts with three on target. Compare that to Liverpool: 28 shots, 13 on target (plus four missed chances hitting the post/crossbar)!
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said that this match highlighted the significant gap between Pochettino’s squad and Liverpool. Despite Chelsea spending over 1 billion pounds to build the team since Boehly arrived in May 2022.
“Liverpool has been on fire so far and played with such intensity. Looking at Chelsea, you might think they need to spend another half a billion pounds on the team,” Sutton stated, as quoted by Metro.
“To be honest, it’s easy to criticize Chelsea, but Liverpool’s pressing was exceptional. As the game progressed, Chelsea’s confidence faded. It was one of the best performances I’ve seen from Liverpool,” added the player who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers.
